BEHIND LOCKED DOORS (Kino on Video) is part of the latest batch of black-and-white film noirs being released from this distribution company (see below for more titles). This 1948 drama, directed by Oscar "Budd" Boettincher, stars Richard Carlson as a private detective who goes undercover at a mental hospital. Lucille Bremer, Douglas Fowley and Tor Johnson also star.

THE GRANDFATHER (Walt Disney Home Video) a 1998 theatrical release that was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, is a period piece about an old man who returns to his native village in Spain, hoping to discover the true bloodlines of his grandchildren. Fernando Fernan Gomez and Cayetana Guillen Cuervo star under Jose Luis Garci’s direction. In Spanish.

(Miramax Home Entertainment) is director Jane Campion’s wild comedy/drama about a young Australian woman, played by Kate Winslet, who is tricked by her worried family into returning home from the ashram she’s joined in India. However, when a cocky cult deprogrammer, played by Harvey Keitel, is brought in, it soon becomes a real question as to who’s going to change whom. The film has wildly contrasting moods, vivid hallucinogenic sequences (great for optical tests of a DVD set-up) and some intriguing plot reversals.

THE INDIAN TOMB (Image Entertainment) is a digitally-restored (by David Shepard) 212-minute German serial, made in 1921. Directed by Joe May, the film stars Conrad Veidt as an Indian man who wants to punish his unfaithful wife, Paul Richter as his rival and Olaf Fonss as an architect caught up in the goings-on. The film also features tigers, crocodiles and snakes, as well as color-tinting of the original black-and-white cinematography, new title cards and a musical score.

THE LONG NIGHT (Kino on Video) is director Anatole Litvak’s 1947 remake of Marcel Carne’s "Le Jour de Leve," a thriller told in flashback in which a man – Henry Fonda in this version – is trapped in his apartment while recalling the circumstances that have led to his predicament. Vincent Price and Barbara Bel Geddes also star. The DVD includes scenes from "Le Jour de Leve."

REINDEER GAMES (Dimension Home Video), released theatrically earlier this year, is director John Frankenheimer’s action thriller about mistaken identity and a Yuletide heist that goes drastically wrong. Ben Affleck, Charlize Theron and Gary Sinise star. The DVD comes with Dolby 5.1 soundtracks in both English and French, an audio commentary track from the director and deleted scenes.

STRANGE IMPERSONATION (Kino on Video) is director Anthony Mann’s 1946 drama about vengeance and plastic surgery, starring Brenda Marshall and Hillar
