Loudspeaker specialist Focal has developed a new concept to allow iPod and hard drive juke box users, plus WiFi and PC/server music fans, a way to convert their products into the heart of a 2.1 hi-fi system – the iCub integrated sub woofer.

iCub is presenting an opportunity for an audience who is interested in non-traditional hi-fi, to access true high-fidelity via a modern product. Based on the specification of the Cub 2 swubwoofer, iCub integrated three BASH amplifiers, with a maximum capacity of 400 Watts, a high precision 20bit D/A convertor and multiple inputs, including optical digital, all with automatic detection.

The iCub system is designed to be simple to configure and use. A pair of speakers can be connected directly to the outputs on the iCub’s stereo amplifier. An adjustment switch allows the output to be “customized” to the size of the speakers – either large or small. Sources can be connected via analog RCA or digitally via the optical input, and the system volume can be controlled by the included remote control.

iCub accepts all standard audio formats, such as DVD and CD, via the analog or digital input. It also is designed to be used to connect to a standard walkman MP3 or integrated hard drive product like the iPod. It also has 60GB of data storage, so it is possible to record audio titles in an uncompressed format to give the benefit of optimal audio quality.

iCub is designed to extend the listening experience of an MP3 walkman from the car into the house by maintaining simple operation but adding back a full sound dimension with high power performance and low distortion.

iCub also offers new prospects for improving music quality when streaming using a WiFi connection and a computer. It also is able to create a Multiroom system using several iCubs throughout the home, with each controlled by a PC or Mac (within the limits of a network router, such as Apple Airport Express).

The iCub is currently available for $750 per unit.
