What is wrong with the world of entertainment and politics today? CNN is reporting in an effort to pre-promote the release of “Inside Deep Throat,” an NC-17-rated documentary about the classic porn flick “Deep Throat,” the original film will be also be re-released. The rub is that the film has been edited from its sleazy yet historically important original version to an R rating. Look what you have done to us, Janet Jackson and Michael Powell!

Audio Video Revolution film reviewer Bill Warren said, “They’ve taken a perfectly watchable, classic porn film and turned it into a completely unwatchable movie. Who exactly watches porn for the plot anyway?”

“Deep Throat” is widely considered to be the most profitable film of all time, with an original production cost of $25,000 and over $600,000,000 in overall sales. It was the real starting point for the adult entertainment business, which has boomed since the ‘70s era of “Deep Throat” to become an $18 billion a year industry in the U.S. alone. Porn pretty much sells as well as music in today’s market. “Deep Throat” was originally banned by the U.S. government in 23 states and was attacked by the Nixon administration and the F.B.I., who reportedly closed down screenings of the film back in 1972. Federal charges were taken against the film’s director, Jerry Damiano. Clearly Nixon’s social conservatism and reactionary style did little to stop the sale and or popularity of pornography. If anything, he helped get the adult industry the PR they needed to boom.

The upcoming documentary (AVR review pending) is co-produced by Oscar winner (“A Beautiful Mind”) Brian Grazer and being released by Universal Pictures. While it is something of an art-house release, “Inside Deep Throat” is highly anticipated, especially in Hollywood.
