As
the war between Blu-ray and HD DVD battles on, Warner patented the
all-in-one disc, containing a movie both in Blu-ray and HD DVD as well
as Standard DVD. Just recently New Medium Enterprises announced that
they have actually developed a technology that is capable of
accomplishing this feat. However, the fees involved with the creation
of these combo discs could very well hinder their production. These new
discs would require licensing fees for three different versions of a
film as well as most likely requiring the consumer to purchase yet
another player, not in existence, to play the multi-layered discs. You
may have heard of New Medium Enterprises when they announced early this
year that they developed a 20-layer DVD that is capable of storing
100GB of data and prices of the discs and players are comparable to
current DVDs.
As it stands it seems that we may have to settle for movie studios being willing to put films out on all three of today’s technologies, separately. The Lake House, released just this past Tuesday is the first to be released in Blu-ray, HD DVD, and Standard DVD versions by Warner Bros. A more hyped and awaited release though will be Superman Returns debut on all three formats on November 28th, 2006.
