Bonus Interview

Interview with Tisbury Audio's Wes Young

First, can you tell our readers about how Tisbury Audio got started, and a bit about your background in HiFi?

I’ve always had a love of hifi and have been building amplifiers and studying their design since my teens. Tisbury Audio got started when I built a simple passive preamp for my system. I couldn’t find anything affordable and of good quality, so as a hobby I started building preamps and selling them on eBay. After a few generations of improvements, they’d built quite a strong following and I was able to quit my day job and work on Tisbury Audio full time.

What are your feelings about the benefits or advantages of using a passive "preamp" or controller over an active preamp?

Most modern sources are standardised to at least 2 volts output, which is more than enough to drive most power amps directly. In this case, an active preamp results in excessive gain which must be reduced again by keeping the volume control low. A passive preamp is often much better suited to this job and makes it much easier to get optimum levels without throwing away any of the signal. Combine this with a high quality stepped attenuator and it’s easy to see how they can improve the sound quality.

Can you tell us about any future products and your long term vision for Tisbury Audio is?

Our goal is to steadily build a whole range of hifi products that are excellent quality, made in the UK and very affordable. We’ve just released our first headphone amplifier and are currently working on its little brother.
