Marantz AV7005 Networking 7.2 AV Preamp/Processor Preview  Print E-mail

The sleek, elegant Marantz AV7005 is a 7.2 channel A/V Preamp/Processor component with six HDMI 1.4a inputs (one on the front), two outputs with Audio Return Channel and 3D support, and balanced XLR outputs for amplifiers and subs.  Though simple at first glance with just two knobs, a drop-down door hides a vacuum fluorescent display along with secondary controls and connectors.

And boy does this component have them.  In addition to the six HDMI 1.4a inputs, vinyl-philes will find an MM phono input being protected by current feedback technology along with six other stereo RCA inputs, four RGB component video inputs, four composite video inputs two coax digital audio inputs, as well as two optical digital audio inputs.

Added to these are networked and Bluetooth streaming capabilities.  The AV7005 is DNLA 1.5 and Windows 7 compliant for access to your PC's music files and internet radio stations via vTuner, Napster, Pandora.  You can even share photos on your TVAnd, by plugging in the optional RX101 to connect to sources like iPods, iPads, or smartphones.  Marantz has also updated their Marantz Dynamic Audio eXpander (M-DAX) which allegedly helps low-fidelity MP3 and WMA files sound better (what do you think, audiophiles?).

Handling all the video from the platitude of inputs is Anchor Bay's fourth-generation video engine ABT2015 10-bit Video Processor / Scaler.  The ABT2015 will handle all transcoding, deinterlacing and scaling to any signal not already at a native 1080p resolution.

In the category of surround sound processing, Marantz 7005 decodes all the modern codecs with ease.  On the Dolby side of the fence, there is TrueHD, Digital Plus, Pro Logic IIz, IIx, II, Virtual Speaker, and Dolby Headphone.  DTS capabilities include HD Master Audio and High Resolution Audio, ES Discrete 6.1, Matrix 6.1, Neo: 6, 96/24, Express, and Neural Sound.  On top of the surround processing, Marantz includes Audessey's MultEQ XT Auto Calibration for beginners, MultEQ Pro for custom installations, Audyssey DSX, Dynamic Volume, and Dynamic EQ.

Operation and customization is handled by an all new, color GUI on-screen display that is supposedly simple, yet comprehensive.  From there you be able to decide what to do with your 7.2 channels of balanced or unbalanced outputs. Dual subs running height-expanded Pro Logic IIx?  Or perhaps up to 2 zones of audio/video (or up to 3 zones of audio) is more your style?  Speaking of audio, remember "radio"?  Well, the Marantz can do that too, with 56 AM/FM/HD tuner presets (eight stations in seven groups), or an optional Sirius Satellite radio connection.

The Marantz AV7005 7.2 Channel Preamp/Processor should be available soon with an MSRP of $1499.  Also be on the look out for a matching sets of five and two-channel amplifiers.
