Amidst reports of a pending bankruptcy by Reuters, Sirius Satellite Radio, today announced that its service will be available in a range of rental cars from Hertz - the world's largest car rental company. The deal starts December 1, 2002 at major airport Hertz locations in California and Florida. Sirius specifically denied reports that they were going bankrupt in a second release sent today calling the Reuters report “misleading.”
Both satellite radio players, XM and Sirius, see the car audio market as their best chance to quickly gain the market share they need if they ever hope to compete with broadcast radio. With Sirius Satellite Radio going into Hertz cars in popular in Florida and California resort locales, an entirely new group of consumers will have a chance to try out this new type of radio broadcast.
Satellite radio is unlike terrestrial radio with better audio quality and in the case of Sirius, no commercials. Satellite radio programming is much different than traditional radio as well. There are many more channels and the content is far more segmented. It takes a while to get a feel for satellite radio thus where better than in a rental car for people to get their first taste of the new medium?
