Howard
Stern, along with a group of strippers and thousands of cheering fans,
began promoting his switch to satellite radio last week, even though
his show on Sirius won’t begin until January 2006. The promotions took
place at a Manhattan rally where he handed out free boom boxes and
satellite subscriptions. 500 fans received free Sirius boom box sets,
and another 20,000 at the rally received redeemable certificates for
free radios.
Howard Stern’s conflicts with the FCC are well-known, with Stern saying “Down with the FCC!” at the rally. Satellite radio, such as XM or Satellite, does not fall under the FCC’s rule, so he may continue his racy content. Stern’s current show on Infinity Broadcasting is scheduled to run until December 2005, but he has indicated on his show that the start date might be pushed up. Last month, Stern signed a five-year deal with Sirius worth an estimated $500 million. |
