YouTube has begun testing a new system that will be capable of streaming high-resolution video and audio files via the website. This has been generating quite a buzz on message forums. Captured tests appear to use a H.264 MP4 encoding, meaning video sizes could range well over 80 MB.
The YouTube video encoding scheme appears to be the same as the video encoding available through iTunes downloads. There have been a few videos available in this high-definition format for a couple of months now. The videos will resemble real 720p widescreen material. Apparently there is a "hack" that can allow any video recorded at a high enough bitrate to be viewed in high definition. If you attach "&fmt=22" to the end of the URL you can view current video in 720p format. If you attach "&fmt=18" to the end of the URL you can view the video in the 480x360 resolution. |
