The DTV transition may have unintended effects on consumer preference for antenna broadcasting. In a report by Harris Corporation, 55 percent of respondents were considering canceling their cable or satellite service altogether in favor of over-the-air, free, HD broadcasting through antennas.
Over-the-air broadcasts would likely give consumers fewer channels to choose from, compared to satellite or cable, but the readiness to switch could mean that more consumers are relying on the Internet for their TV needs. Other factors that indicate that consumers are considering dropping cable or satellite in favor of antenna broadcasts include the recent numbers for new cable/satellite subscriptions being at their lowest point in history (less than 1% growth), and large spikes in antenna sales. |
