“Pay-TV providers are working to head off a possible shift that might devalue their services by offering TV Everywhere,” says Jayant Dasari, research analyst at Parks. He suggests that these services would act as a supplement to traditional offering. It might not be enough to convince people to keep their cable, but “Providers could use them as models for future business strategies.”
Cord-cutters, as Dasari calls them, are people who have eliminated their cable or satellite service, instead opting for internet based entertainment. He says that though numbers aren’t yet substantial, service providers are worried about the growing trend.
Alongside the 25 million homes watching television online, 20 million are watching movies. According to Parks, there’s not yet a strong indicator of whether consumers are more apt to get their content straight from the source, or from an over-the-top provider like Hulu.
