Just months after a similar announcement from AMC, Hollywood Theaters has made a deal with Sony to get on the digital conversion train.  At thirteen U.S. locations, a total of 167 screens will be equipped with Sony 4K projectors. In addition to the 4K projectors being installed will be a total of 53 projectors capable of 3D projection with RealD 3D support.

The conversion will take only a few months according to Sony. Their own Digital Cinema Solutions and Services group will be working with Hollywood Theaters on integration, installation, maintenance and service of the new projectors.

Clyde Cornell, CEO for Hollywood Video says that the projector upgrade isn’t the only thing coming from Sony.  “We are also excited to be a part of Sony's DCSS alternative content program and plan to fully exploit their broad range of media and entertainment divisions such as sports, music, and gaming to bring fresh, innovative entertainment options to the big screen and create new streams of ancillary revenues for Hollywood Theaters.”

The Muvico 14-plex out where I live has all Sony 4Ks as well. While I have some
qualms with their image quality from the get-go, upconverting a 2K Digital
Cinema Package to 4K does have its benefits. Chief among them is a smoothing of
the images that makes pixel structure nearly invisible, replicating a film look
much much better than most 2K projectors do in similar auditorium and screen
sizes.
