Sony
is showcasing the SRX-R110, a market-ready version of its digital
cinema SXRD 4K projector which it hopes will be adopted as move
theaters start to switch replacing film with digital projectors. The
projectors have been shipping since early October and by December Sony
expects to up production to 100 units per month.
Earlier models did not work so well but the company is confident in the SRX-R110 having recently demonstrated the projector in Hollywood to an audience of major studio executives as well as representatives from independent production companies, industry organizations and exhibitors. Landmark Theaters is expected to be the first major chain to adopt the new projector. The SXRD 4K Projector was demonstrated using 2K and 4K footage from movies like Star Wars Episode II: Revenge of the Sith and The Sound of Music. Footage was screened alongside the same footage being projected by a 2K DLP projector for comparison. Sony says the projector offers great contrast and vivid color at a 4096x2160 pixel resolution (four times that of current high-definition displays). It is specified at 10,000 ANSI Lumens and designed for screens that are up to 40 feet wide. |
