At the CEDIA 2002 Expo MartinLogan announced the introduction of the Depth—a reference, powered subwoofer system. According to MartinLogan, the Depth delivers dramatic bass detail and attack using proprietary low-mass, high-resolution aluminum drivers, advanced servo monitoring and control, TriLinear™ configuration, BalancedForce™ bass alignment, a low distortion amp and highly evolved enclosure technology.

The 2001 release of the Descent was MartinLogan's first foray into the world of subwoofer manufacturing. "MartinLogan set out to engineer the Descent subwoofer by developing standards beyond traditional subwoofer technology. Designing to the higher standards of superior electrostatic transducers became the MartinLogan challenge. New low levels of distortion and accurate levels of system integration result in the highest levels of performance available today. The Descent sets new standards in system performance," said MartinLogan president and founder Gayle Sanders at the time of the Descent's release.

TriLinear™ configuration uses three identical drivers to maintain control of an advanced small driver while moving as much air as some drivers three times larger, allowing precise, yet powerful bass—in a small package.

BalancedForce™ bass alignment, originally engineered for the cost-no-object, state of the art Statement™ E2 system, uses two or more drivers mounted facing away from each other. The Depth's three drivers, spaced 120 degrees apart, operate in exact opposition resulting in maximum vibration cancellation.

The Depth uses a switching amplifier rated at a true 300 watt RMS (500 watt peak). The MartinLogan team designed the Depth with a robust input/output architecture for use in both stereo and multi-channel systems. LFE input effectively uses no low-pass filter, instead leaving crossover control to the processor. Left/Right line and speaker level inputs integrate an audiophile grade low-pass filter with six settings ranging from 30–80Hz. Left/Right line level outputs integrate an optional 40 or 70Hz high-pass filter. RCA output allows for easy connection of multiple Depth's.

Handcrafted and designed by MartinLogan's engineering and industrial design team the Depth features a black or clear brushed aluminum trim accent and proprietary MartinLogan ETC™ spikes for maximum bass performance.
