There’s no doubt that the Sonos Multi-Room Music System is cool. Who doesn’t want wireless access to their entire iTunes library as well as internet radio stations like Pandora and Last.fm from anywhere in the house? What has always been lacking though is a simple and inexpensive way to get started.
Sonos sees that problem, and are hoping to address it with the ZonePlayer S5 All-in-One Wireless Music System. Rather than having to purchase a separate player and speakers, the ZonePlayer S5 combines both into one package.Featuring five speakers, each with its own Class-D amplifier, the S5 is said to be fairly capable when it comes to sound reproduction. Two tweeters ensure crisp highs, a pair of 3” drivers handle the mid range and bass is covered by a 3.5” woofer.
While iTunes library support is the most noted feature, the ZonePlayer S5 can handle a variety of audio codecs including MP3, AAC, WMA, FLAC, WAV, and AIFF. The S5 can also stream from an impressive list of internet radio stations including Last.fm, Napster, Pandora, and Rhapsody, and downloads from any DRM free music service.
Out of the box customers will need to use their Mac or PC to control their music, or purchase a touchscreen controller, though iPhone users are able to download Sonos controller software directly to their phone at no cost. With an asking price of $399, the Sonos ZonePlayer S5 will be available in late October.
