Bowers & Wilkins is one of a growing number of high-end A/V companies that has had to expand in the last year or two. Onkyo, for example, recently embraced Walmart as a retail partner.
In a letter to B&W dealers, chairman Joe Atkins said that there were several reasons for this, but that the ever changing retail landscape was a prime concern. "It is hard to overstate the extent to which the U.S. retail environment in general and the challenges faced by specialty audio/video dealers in particular have changed fundamentally over the last 18 to 24 months."
He also cited decreasing numbers of specialty A/V retailers as a concern. "Many of you have found ways to evolve your business model to adapt to the new world, "he wrote, "however, many dealers have not and the result is more store closings and business failures than we have seen in the last 20 years combined."
