Mitsubishi Demonstrates 4K2K Upscaling  Print E-mail

It’s one of those things we knew was coming, but it’s still refreshing to see that companies are working on upscaling for upcoming 4K2K televisions. There isn’t much in the way of detail from Mitsubishi on this, though we expect to hear more as time goes by.  What we do know is that they’re taking 1080p signals and scaling them on up to 4K.

For whatever reason, this is not yet able to be done with Blu-ray discs. Mitsubishi has stated that the algorithm and software that upconvert from a Full HD signal, but haven’t stated anything about lesser signals.

For example, whether a signal from a standard DVD be able to go up to 4K. While an upscaled 1080p signal won’t look as good as a signal that’s natively 4K2K, it’s nice to know we won’t have to ditch our Blu-ray players too quickly.

It was only a matter of time. Possibly useful for those with 100"+ screens,
providing the scaling algorithm is high quality. Useless for everyone else. If I
had to choose between a new 1080p 3D 60" screen or a 4K projector with no
native content to speak of, I'd go the 3D display any day.
