Ypsilon’s VPS-100 has a few key features that make it quite an impressive unit. To start with, a passive RIAA circuit with zero feedback. Other preamps often use active RIAA equalization, but Ypsilon prefers passive due to a feedback loop in the active circuit that creates a ringing sound in certain notes. This passive RIAA EQ was established by the recording industry to improve sound quality and playback time.
The LCR network of the VPS-100 uses a pair of gain stages and two T filters. An air core inductor forms the 2123Hz pole and has virtually no stray capacitance, according to Aaudio. The 50-500Hz pole is formed directly at the output of the second gain stage with a high signal level. Both stages utilize Siemens C3g tubes.
Accuracy on the VPS-100 is key, and it features an RIAA accuracy of 20Hz-20kHz ±0.5dB. It’s got an overall frequency response of 10Hz-40kHz, and an output impedance of 1200 Ohms. The VPS-100 is available now from authorized dealers at $26,000.
