Vizio Ends Plasma HDTV Production  Print E-mail

Vizio will be exiting the plasma TV sector of flat screen TV production as soon as it sells the last of its inventory.  Vizio is a young company, just over 5 years old, but it quickly gained a large chunk of the flat screen market through its low pricing and big-box retailer deals.

Vizio will continue to produce and sell LCD TVs, but it no longer produces plasma displays.  The company website is still selling the units, but there is little left in stock, according to co-founder Laynie Newsome.

The reasons behind this quick pull-out are complex, but Newsome cited consumer preference for LCDs as a driving factor.  He noted that in big-box stores, LCDs often appear brighter and crisper than plasmas because of the fluorescent lighting in these stores that produces glare and dullness on plasmas.

Sounds like a good reason "in big-box stores, LCDs often appear brighter and
crisper than plasmas because of the fluorescent lighting in these stores that
produces glare and dullness on plasmas." Don't sell the best, sell what the
cow-sumer will buy.

Yeah...Since CRTs look great in bright light Vizio should crank retrofit the
plasma production line.

With Pioneer moving out Vizio could have ended up
with more plasma sales, but noooooooooo! An odd choice just when Vizio 1080p
plasmas were within "spitting distance" of Panasonic and Pioneer quality
- especially considering the price these were very saleable I thought.

Is
there a conspiracy here?

It's about profitability in the face of the recession, not a conspiracy to
deprive the world of a more deserving technology...Vizio voted with YOUR wallet.
What they sell more of gets continued development. If consumers had bought more
of their plasmas, you'd still have Vizio plasmas to buy; so don't blame the
corporation if YOU didn't support their plasma sales.

Can somebody advice on where Plasma sales are going ?
Zindar Mendoza  - You telling the co-founder about business?   |2009-02-20 15:19:16
Guess what? If plazma looks reflective in the stores it will be that way at
home. Duh. Unless you have a room that can accomodate a plazma's deficiencies
(reflections)you will buy LCD. I have a theater room and use LCD. Plazma is not
all that great anyway.

You people are nuts! Pioneer Elite was, and still is the cream of the crop when
it comes to tv's. And vizio isn't even in the same sport as Pioneer, let alone
within spitting distance. Good luck getting your crappy vizio fixed when it
breaks, because they don't sell parts! Now you have to throw away your tv and
buy a real one. Once again mediocrity rules, and it's because all of the
sheepole keep buying the same average crap from best buy. And Zindar, I'll put
my pro-111 up against whatever lcd you have. Can you say black level? I guess
not, considering the Elites have the best blacks in the business.
John Werner  - I hope plasmas aren't on the way out...They were   |2009-02-22 16:09:38
Sir, I've seen crap and it was a rebranded Gateway Sampo plasma. The Vizios
were and are not crap.

One of my best friends has a 720p model and it's quite
decent. Yes the blacks are not reference like the Pioneer, but on changing
program material and not laboratory tests I've never had reason to say "I'm
leaving your TV sucks!"

When I made the remark "spitting
distance" I did not mean to offend anyone who owns the finest...The Pioneer.
Sure, I'd like to own the Pioneer, but I couldn't rationalize the extra expense
over a very good Samsung 1080p plasma, and Vizio did not yet make a 1080p
model.

Fact is Vizio does make some models that, to me at least, looked a
little weak. But, as time went on they seemed to get their footing and each
newer generation was a stronger performer than the last. I believe these latest
1080p plasmas to be particularly good in the real world if not the test bench of
a "TV-nista" (LOL...A joke!). Vizios may not be reliable and if not
that's a big problem. My friends has proven to be reliable under heavy use.
All in all it's a real shame that Vizio on "the bang-for-buck" front
will no longer be available as well as the Pioneer which in almost all ways
video sets the bar.
