The California Energy Commission is mulling over a proposal aimed at reducing greenhouse gases.  The crux of the argument?  By eliminating non-energy efficient HDTVs, there will be less pressure on the energy grid and ultimately less greenhouse gas.

The commission should reach a decision on the proposal sometime this summer.  If it was put into effect, it would require that stores take the offending TVs off their shelves.  Experts believe this would affect about twenty-five percent of the TVs on the market, mainly those 40-inches in size and above.

According to estimates, roughly twenty percent of flat panel TVs shipped in 2008 featured “green” aspects, and this number should jump to seventy percent by 2012.  The CEC is spinning this proposal as a way for the public to save money on their energy bills.
