We
have just received a list of DVD-Audio discs from various major and
smaller labels that are slated to be released in the coming months of
2004. As we all know nothing is guaranteed in terms of release dates
for the list. AudioRevolution.com reviewer Ben Shyman is still
drooling, waiting for the day Yes’ Close To The Edge album is finally
released on DVD-Audio.
No information was available as to any or all of these titles being released as “Dual Discs.” If you are not familiar with dual Discs they are a new type of two sided disc that have a DVD (can be DVD-Audio) on one layer and a CD layer on the other. All of the major labels are in the midst of a test marketing exercise with Dual Discs in Boston and Seattle. Reports from store managers we have spoken to is that the discs are functionally working well but not selling at any spectacular rate. The combination of a $18.99 price tag for albums like AC-DC’s Back in Black or Audioslave’s self titled record are quite a bit above the price that the CD sell on the open market for. Pundits say if the dual disc is to succeed in replacing the CD in the bins it will need a lot more added value (surround mixes, long form videos and other goodies) on the DVD side with a price tag of no more than $14.
