Lennon Killer Up For Parole - Lennon FBI Docs May Become Public Print E-mail
Monday, 04 October 2004
Mark David Chapman, the 49 year old man who murdered John Lennon, is up for parole again. He was denied parole in 2000 and 2002. Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, wrote a letter in protest to paroling Chapman saying that Lennon was a man who “brought light and hope to the whole world with his words and music.” This third chance for parole for Chapman comes as a University of California at Irvine professor fights to get access to the 1970-1972 FBI records kept on John Lennon. Some suggest that the Nixon administration had plans to deport Lennon for his anti-Vietnam stance. With the help of the ACLU and the new freedom of information laws, the general public may find out exactly to what extent Big Brother and Uncle Sam were keeping tabs on one of the world’s most powerful musicians and songwriters.

The likelihood of Mark David Chapman ever seeing the light of day is very slim. The possibility of the FBI documentation on John Lennon becoming public is far stronger. The ramifications could be relevant to modern issues as some conservatives in the United States are calling for a renewal of the Patriot Act as a way to fight terrorism while liberals are dragging their feet because of potential privacy issues and invasions of personal liberties. Depending on what is found in the Lennon files, popular support for the renewal of the legislation could swing one way or the other.
