Rock super-group Genesis announced officially today that they will reunite with drummer and lead singer Phil Collins at the helm. Genesis is one of the most successful rock bands in recorded music history and is known as a great road show. The most popular and “poppy” work from the group is with Collins on vocals yet it is their music lead by former lead signer, Peter Gabriel, that is what the most hardcore, old-school fans are pining for most.
According to the band’s official website, Genesis is going to re-release much of their catalog in surround sound on DVD and SACD during 2007 with the oldest, Peter Gabriel material coming out last. This is the best news fans of music in surround sound have heard in years as record labels focus their efforts on selling poor quality audio as single downloads instead of reworking classic albums into higher resolution, more engaging audio formats.
While Gabriel will not be with the band as they start touring he has not killed off the idea according to an October 19, 2006 report from the BBC where Gabriel said “It's not that I've ruled it out, but I've got some new material that I'll be working on." Would it make sense to do a few shows with the band to promote the re-releases of the older Gabriel Genesis records as well as perhaps promoting his own projects? With enough money on the table, anything is possible.
