Samsung's LCD business is big, and thanks to the recent acquisition of Sony's piece of a joint LCD venture it's been getting even bigger. The folks at Samsung are through trying to manage such a big business within the greater structure and are spinning off a new company that's going to be handling LCDs and LCDs alone.
Of course, there's a much bigger benefit than just organizational ease. The upcoming launch of Samsung Display will allow the company to respond more quickly to customer demand, shift directions in a more timely fashion and, of course, focus all its efforts on one specific task. Shareholders still have to approve the arrangement but there's no reason to expect they won't. Assuming this goes through, the new company will be official this April.
