Phillips Cinema 21:9 Has Movie Theater Aspect Ratio  Print E-mail
Home Theater News LCD HDTV News

HDTVs are moving close to the movie-theater experience with the introduction of Cinema 21:9 from Philips.  It is a 56-inch LCD that offers an aspect ratio of 2.33:1, the same that is used in movie-theaters across the country.

There are little other details released about the specs of this HDTV as of yet, but it is confirmed that it will be using the Philips Ambilight technology for background luminance.

Television shows currently use 16:9 aspect ratio while movies are usually wider, which is why most widescreen TVs must correct distortion by using the black bars at the top and bottom.  However, with this new, even wider TV from Philips, it looks like the average TV show will see some vertical black bars to compensate for the length of the screen.

Despite this drawback, the new screen size may display movies more naturally.  The Philips Cinema 21:9 is expected in late February.

My professional opinion is that Philips
is the one of the least reliable HD
mfg
in the market. They are more returns than Florida has bugs. They are made in
a Chinese factory which offers workers
a dorm to live in. When someone down the
street is offering a little more in benefits or money, they quit. There is no
concern about workmanship. Its price, price and how much will U work for.
Philips had to create a website and US address just to resell the refurb stuff
they had all over.
John Werner  - Very interesting...   |2009-01-29 23:15:41
When I was younger I somehow thought "letterboxed" was a good thing. As
I've matured I have come to the conclusion that the TV experience no matter how
great is not able to come close to the theater experience and shouldn't be
saddled with black bars. Futhermore, I think all DVDs and BDs of all movies
should be mastered as 16:9 aspect. Simply put: I hate black bars period.

The concept here presented by Phillips is an interesting one, but ultimately
fails as you will be trading no black bars for cinemascope pictures for black
bars on stand 16:9 programs and movies. I guess if extra side inches magically
appeared and disappeared it may seem like a revelation...But that's limited to
projection screens with active masking.

I too, have observed Phillips being
quite lackluster in both quality and reliability. The brand has lost all of
it's luster in the North American market due to this.

My Philips is not made in China, Mexico. Latest and greatest with 120Hz works
great 47". The 3 other Philips work fine, never had an issue. Most are
assembled in Mexico. All major brands have China connection, samsung, LG,
Sony(actually a Samsung product anyway, overpriced marketing BS)
