In a recent press conference, LG stated that they plan to sell as many as four hundred thousand 3D capable televisions in 2010. It’s a fairly reasonable goal by all accounts, especially considering how big LG’s sales numbers are. The bigger surprise is in their plans for the year after. In 2011, LG says they’ll sell around ten times that amount, with an estimate of 3.4 million units.
While there is a lot of doubt being cast about the numbers being tossed around, it’s important to note that just because a television is 3D capable doesn’t mean it has to be purchased with that use in mind.
The announcement was for sales goals, but it may be more appropriate to view these as production goals. LG knows what kind of sales to expect for high end televisions, and regardless of whether 3D takes off in the home or not, 3D sets will undoubtedly be on the higher end. So we can judge by this announcement that production of 3D televisions will be stepped up pretty significantly over the next two years.
