Hitachi and Sharp are Going Glasses-Free Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 April 2010
ImageYou just can’t get around it.  3D glasses are goofy looking, inconvenient and prohibitively expensive.  It’s an uphill battle to get these into homes, and whoever breaks through with the first good glasses-free experience is bound to reap the benefits. Hitachi and Sharp are both on the move in the glasses-free race.  Both companies recently announced parallax barrier displays in smaller sizes that they’re hoping will give them a leg up over the competition.
Its suspected, though not yet confirmed, that Sharp is the company behind the screens of the Nintendo 3DS, but Sharp also revealed one relatively big surprise.  In addition to the small 3.7 inch display they showed off last week, Sharp is bringing a 10.1 inch parallax display to the table.  It’s designed for use with e-readers, tablets and netbooks.
Just after Sharp announced the 10.1 inch display, Hitachi came out with an announcement of its own.  The company will be working on a 3.1 inch display with a 480 x 854 resolution.

For now, they’re sticking with devices that don’t have to worry about positioning, the biggest weakness of parallax displays.  So while we may have to wait a while before glasses-free 3D can come to the living room, we’ll likely have it in our phones, MP3 players and handheld game systems within the next few years.
