LG has announced that it will begin producing solar electric systems – thin-film solar cells that could potentially battle the high prices associated with traditional solar panels. The production process for solar cells is similar to FTF-LCD panels, and LG will be upgrading its Paju display complex in Korea to test this new venture.
Sharp will also begin upgrading its FTF-LCD manufacturing facilities to produce solar cells, and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp., large producer of FTF-LCD displays, will also join solar cell manufacturing. Nano Markets research firm claims that the solar cell industry will grow from $4.6 billion in 2011 to $14 billion in 2015. |
