CONNECTIONS: The Digital Living Conference and Showcase is still months away, but the keynote from Samsung VP Scott Birnbaum is already raising some eyebrows. He’ll be covering the standards, the keynote greatest hits if you will. He’ll be talking about the future of 3D, and the future of LCD displays. He’ll also be talking about broadband connected televisions, something that’s becoming a lot more common. Most interestingly though, is a call to clarity. Consumers that follow the HDTV game don’t have too much trouble with it. The average buyer though, is less clued in as to what everything means. For example, the difference between 1080p and 1080i is a question I still hear asked nearly every time I’m asking for a TV. Contrast ratios are not only confusing, but practically useless when looking for a set. Refresh rates are more confusing than ever with plasma displays advertising 600Hz, and LCDs touting a variety of refresh rates that could be either smoothing technologies or actual refresh rates. Birnbaum will apparently be asking for more easy-to-understand data for customers when it comes to TV selection. |
