If there’s one thing that home theater purists love more than making snarky comments about Bose, it may be singing the praises of the Oppo BDP-83. From a relatively low profile company, the BDP-83 made a huge impact with its stong feature set, Anchor Bay VRS chipset, and quick load times. Oppo is hoping to take advantage of this good will and make a move to produce Blu-ray players, and only Blu-ray players.
While their engineering team of around one hundred will stay based in China, spokesman Pan Min states that Oppo will be setting up a base to the UK in the next few months. The move is designed to help Oppo further develop their Blu-ray business.
As far as other players go, Min says they’re done with anything that’s not Blu. “We have sold out of DVD players and there are no more to come,” says Min. “The DVD business is over for us. We are committed to Blu-ray.” Min acknowledges the good feelings towards the company and attributes this to their smaller operating size. “We may be a very small company, but where we are different from the likes of Denon and Sony is that we listen to our customers. Feedback is really important.”
