MPAA Takes on RealNetworks This Week  Print E-mail

The trial between the Motion Picture Association of America and RealNetworks over the latter’s brief foray into DVD burning technology with RealDVD last fall is being heard this week in San Francisco.  RealNetworks contends that its program, which allowed users to rip a copy of a DVD to their hard drives, was meant for a one-time rip to a portable device, which falls in the realm of fair use.

The MPAA claims that this violates copyright and promotes consumers to “rent, rip and return.”  The National Consumer League supports RealNetworks, because consumers surveyed feel that DVDs should be able to be stored on their computer hard drive, just like CDs.

Causing controversy above and beyond the facts of the case, Judge Marylin Patel, who was the judge who shut down Napster in 2001, will not allow press to cover the trial at the request of the MPAA.

I still don't know why MPAA does not take on kaleidescape since they are doing
nothing different then any other DVD ripping program.

what are these STUPID FULLS (MPAA) doing??? Any school kid can rip or copy DVD
on their computer without help of REAL or anyone else. Even if REAL would
disable the function in their service, or whatever they are being sued over,
what would that change? I don't get how stupid anyone has to be to sue a
particular company for ability to rip a DVD. Kaleidescape is not being sued,
because they "paid off well" (with our money, mind you) for right to rip
and store DVD's on their servers, which BTW cost (if you have no idea who they
are), 10K and up, for basic model. That's outrageous pricing (though it's
awesome technology if you can afford it)!
