Man Fires on Analog TV due to DTV Conversion  Print E-mail

Although the government and industry leaders are spending millions to educate the public about the DTV switch and get converter boxes into as many American households as they can, this was not enough for at least one man, who would apparently rather have no TV at all than suffer through several minutes of technical installation troubleshooting.

He had a converter box, but couldn’t get it to work – and rather than call the DTV hotline for some technical help, he decided to load his gun and shoot several times into his TV set.  As KARE-TV Minneapolis-St. Paul reports, the 70 year old man is now charged with unlawful use of a firearm.  He was taken into custody after a short standoff with police.  His wife indicated that he had been drinking prior to shooting his TV.

Bob  - What? you can't shoot your own TV?     |2009-02-26 16:04:01
that sucks, i think shooting your own TV is one of those rare American privilege
we should have.
Jerry  - DTV PROBLEM     |2009-02-26 18:03:56
DTV PROBLEM has not been solved!
The coupons have expired.
They will not send
more.
I went to freecycle and asked for one!
Xavier put one under his
doormat.
My borther-in-law went over to get it.
He mailed it to me
yesterday.
The Circuit City went out of business.
The Sears store was
closed...
Now I have to go to Fry's next town.
this is getting bad because my
friend had to take his back to Wal-Mart.
He says only 6.1 and 6.2 are on DTV...
optides  - Where is the antenna?   |2009-02-26 23:20:44
Well, the antenna is usually on top of the TV, or the roof.

I come across a lot
of articles about converter boxes, but haven't seen many on antennas as the June
switchover approaches.

Yet acquiring the signal is critical, and if one is
using a converter, one is inevitably using some type of antenna.

The digital
signal is a frail reed. I have seen great signals with old rooftop entenna,
particularly in flat areas where I've set up new digital HD televisions. I've
seen limited reception in other areas; tall buildings, other structures, sight
lines to broadcast towers are poor, if any. And I've seen dicey reception --
different digital channels come in well enough to lock into, on different
days.

So where are the articles on which antennas are best to deal with this
week link of digital TV?
Mitchell Erblich  - how to end TV suffering?   |2009-02-27 00:49:14
I heard that shoes are needed. FYI, you need to get the throw just right so the
heal hits the tube. No, tennis shoes are not acceptable..
Mitchell Erblich  - On a serious note   |2009-02-27 01:00:16
The key is the antenna and its location. A great antenna is one that can placed
at one location and get a clean (no snow) analogue/current signal for all
channels without any movement. In my experience on top of a roof is best, second
is an attic, and the third is a balcony or a fence. The last location probably
will have direction issues and will restrict the number of channels. Lastly, the
bigger is better and don't use rabbit ears.
Pick  - the suffering begins   |2009-03-01 02:19:04
Hey that analog monster was asking for it. Seriously, that guy had a television
that had worked for the last 40-50 years and because some greedy charlitans
wanted to sell you cable, cell phones and wireless internet; and some
politicians agreed to let them do it, you have a 100 lb paperweight in your
living room.

It amazes me that people can drive a car. It takes 8 steps to get your car to
move. A big part of our population is brainless or unwilling to take the time
to learn how to use their equipment.
GREG  - WIFE DEFENDS DRINKING AND KILLING TV SET AND CONVE   |2009-03-01 21:37:56
Ther you go NRA lovers around the USA another Hi IQ that knows what to use a gun
on. Good thing his wife or kids weren't bothering him too. We have a place for
him to go in NJ "Rehab" and a place for his family to go "Domestic
Violence Shelter".
STFU GREG  - Quiet, Greg The Troll   |2009-06-11 16:27:33
This has nothing to do with the NRA. You can't even spell, so why are you
assuming anyone with a gun has "low IQ"?. Oh, I forgot; you're a silly
liberal that wants total control of everything by the government. You and your
silly shelters. Why not just put a sign out front "Want to kill your missing
wife? She's inside here!". You're an ignorant waste of flesh. Please go get
treated in the UK for cancer. Yes, that means 'die'.
