Los Gatos based HDi, thanks to a partnership with a manufacturer in China, expects to have units available for sale in May, and full scale production in time for Christmas. But how much with a 100” laser television cost? HDi estimates between $10,000 and $15,000.
Current LCD and Plasma sets sold in big box stores reach that price range and the higher end sets eclipse it at much smaller sizes. The new set from HDi will also weigh around a quarter of what an equivalent LCD display would weigh, and consume only a fifth as much power.
HDi recently showed their new technology to representatives from Sharp, Sony and Mitsubishi, in hopes of interesting the companies in licensing the technology in the future. CEO Ingemar Jansson says he’s not ready to give up the exclusivity on the new tech just yet. “For the moment we are looking at mass manufacturing, but there may be a time where they can buy the parts from us.”
