A recent survey from Leichtman Research Group revealed that more than 60 percent of US households have an HDTV and 26 percent have more than one. That's a huge improvement in just a few years and TV makers are hoping to see those same numbers for their new 3D sets.
Those companies are going to have to work hard to win consumers over. Although 80 percent of respondents were familiar with 3D televisions, only eight percent said they were interested in purchasing a 3D TV. At the moment, less than one percent of households actually own one.
The onus is on manufacturers and content providers to prove to consumers that 3D is a valuable addition, which clearly hasn't happened yet. " With modest consumer demand for 3D-capable TVs, the potential growth of 3DTV will rely on a continued push of 3DTV by manufacturers and retailers," says analyst Bruce Leichtman.
