DTV Transition Deadline may be Extended  Print E-mail

The stimulus plan that President Obama has put forward would include $650 million toward the transition of all-digital national TV broadcasting.  This proposal, if it is approved, would mean postponing the February 17th cut-off deadline for analogue broadcasting in order to ensure there are no program outages for customers without the equipment to process the switch.

Related to this news are the proposals of Senators and House representatives that the February 17th deadline be moved to June 12th.  This delay is sought mainly by Democrats who support Obama’s request that more time be given to consumers, particularly the poor and the elderly, to prevent broadcasting outages and signal loss.

The House is suggesting that the coupons being distributed to consumers to purchase converter boxes be given extended expiration dates, and that consumers with expired coupons be able to apply for new ones.  This coupon program is a $1.34 billion investment to ease the transition to digital programming, yet delays in sending out the coupons have caused a 2 million coupon waiting list.

Also within the proposed stimulus plan is $6 billion to upgrade and supply broadband Internet access to areas that are currently underserved, and $2 billion towards computer hardware and software for government agencies and schools.

The country has had over 2 years to prepare for this transition. And working as
an electronic salesman, I have seen many ignorant people delaying and delaying
the transition. Mainly because they are on rabit ears and do not want monthly
payments. Hey, guess what, the world is moving forward whether you like it or
not, if you don't want monthly payments, fine, don't expect to watch TV after
Feburary. But yet again, our country CONTINUES to lower the standards for those
who feel the need to be different. Just either A) buy a Digital TV, B) buy a
converter box, comes out to $13.49 after the government coupon, or C) get Cable
or Satellite TV..... End of discussion.
Clark Zarifis  - Time is up!   |2009-01-22 14:50:06
Time is up people. Of the number of people who are not ready for the
conversion, how many will still be unprepared after the new deadline? If I
recalled Obama wanted it in June. 10%, 20%, 30% or more? I think personally it
will run at least 25%. It's time to make the switch and force people to make
the conversion now!
Optides  - Come on, is this necessary?   |2009-01-22 15:11:55
I am an enthusiastic user of digital TV, and made the switch over in 2003. But
I am completely dubious about the merit of this compulsory, mandatory, change.
So the FCC wants to give some leftover bandwidth to other uses? So the stations
want to have their many sub-channels, for special purpose or more revenue? What
is so urgent. We are not in a country trying to heave itself up by its
bootstraps, like South Korea, who went digital and established Samsung and LG as
global DTV factors. Let it be; keep up the analog and digital dual
broadcasting.

And let my little old Sony 9" in my workshop keep working...
Mitchell Erblich  - What's wrong with an antenna? And another delay?   |2009-01-22 15:43:43
If their is a 2 million wait list for coupons and our digital TVs are going to
work anyway, what is the rush to reallocate the analogue channels?

My cable
company wants $60 for a normal set of channels without digital, movie channels,
etc. We are entering tough times and reducing unnecessary costs is important for
most of us.

Me, I have a top of the line 1080p Kuro, with a hi-gain 1M flat
SQUARE antenna / BluRay for Hi-Def and Comcast for baseline other channels.

Hello, I got on the digital hi-def wagon in 2004. The original deadline for the
transition was 2006.That got pushed back to 2009,so the stations would have time
and money to convert over. The public had plenty of time to purchase a converter
box from the internet, any electronics store and even a lot of grocery stores.
They were informed that the coupons were on a firt come first serve basis as
stated in the newspapers and on the website. Also the message is being flashed
across the television sreens during programings so I do not see the reason to
delay this any further.
Michael P  - extension is necessary, get over it   |2009-01-23 12:09:49
Many stations will lose a large percentage of their audience when the conversion
happens. Digital doesn't have the range that analog does. And because of
digital's dependance on a strong signal to even provide a viewable signal, many
need an antenna upgrade to allow them to receive stations that they have been
viewing since the beginning of the television era. Greed shouldn't be an excuse
for leaving some without news and weather from an inexpensive local source. And
we all know that the reason for the reallocation of the bandwith is all about
greed!
Edgar Hatchel  - Many stations won't make it   |2009-01-25 20:58:06
Thing is that seems to be ignored many stations transmitters just may not make
it the additional time. I have worked at TV stations over past few years and at
least 2 of these have transmitters that will not work that long. There have been
no parts available for repair of these transmitters and they aren't gonna last
for this new extension.

Maybe we should also extend the income tax deadline for the poor and elderly if
they are not ready by April 15 ... or not require them to pay at all. And we
should provide free digital TVs for all the illegal aliens now in this country
too. Obama can just print more money.
