The International 3D Society (I3DS) has released a new study that reveals some amazing numbers for 3D movies. It’s no surprise that 3D movies did well in the last year, but capturing a third of the market is impressive indeed.
Up until ‘Avatar,’ most 3D movies shared equal revenue from 3D and 2D showings. 3D edged out 2D in all cases, but not by much. In most cases the difference in revenue was made up by the difference in ticket prices. 3D tickets cost more, so if the same amount of people see each, the 3D revenue would be higher. Obviously, James Cameron’s blockbuster of a film made the difference. Around 80 percent of the money made by ‘Avatar’ was from 3D viewings. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ had a similar share, with about 70 percent of the revenue coming from 3D tickets. The I3DS says that this is a great indicator for the continuing popularity of 3D movies. It’s interesting to note, though, that this summer’s first huge movie, ‘Iron Man 2,’ isn’t coming out in 3D. Then again, Toy Story 3 isn’t far off. |
