The $99 Roku player is adding a free upgrade – Amazon’s On Demand video service. Customers will be able to purchase or rent DVDs and TV shows the day after they are released, and will have access to the 40,000 titles currently in Amazon’s database.
Users will not require a subscription or other fees in order to access this free service, but they will be required to pay per title. The Roku player plugs into any TV and uses high speed internet to bring the streaming content from Amazon to the living room. Amazon does not offer high-definition video or multi-channel audio yet, and rental time starts from when the video is downloaded, not when it is first played. However, this free upgrade is a way for streaming video to be easily accessed through the TV, and is a bid by Roku to gain some ground in the set-top box market. |
