Myka Releases ION Web-to-TV PC Print E-mail
Thursday, 05 November 2009
ImageSkirting the line between an HTPC and a set top solution, Myka’s ION is (according to Myka) able to play most media formats, and view web based video content.  The ION sports a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor and NVIDIA’s MCP7A-ION chipset and GeForce 9400M graphics processor, allowing for full 1080p playback with 7.1 channel audio. The ION connects to the net via an Ethernet cable, or with the addition of wireless 8902.11 N adapter for $40.  The base unit, which runs $379 sports an 160GB hard drive, which can be upgraded as high as a full Terabyte for an additional $125.  A Blu-ray drive can also be tacked on for $225, making the grand total for the top of the line unit $776.

The Myka ION has a solid software set that includes the same well received user interface as featured in the original Myka box.  The web video aggregator Boxee is included, and can synchronize with other copies of Boxee running on other computers.  The incredibly popular media manager XBMC is also preinstalled on the ION.

Along with an HDMI output, the ION features DVI, and VGA outputs.  Sound can head out through HDMI or through S/PDIF jacks in the back. Onboard audio is handled by Realtek’s ALC662 5.1 channel HD codec, but Myka says that full 7.1 playback is possible. Since the ION uses such efficient internals, an added bonus is that there’s no need for a fan, making this an incredibly quiet piece of hardware.
