No matter how good a device is, there’s always something that can be improved. The well received ASUS O! Play HDP-R1 was missing a few finishing touches, and ASUS has answered the call with the HDP-R3.While not leaps and bounds different than its predecessor, the HDP-R3 does add one function which is becoming an absolute essential when it comes to set-top devices – wireless networking. The popular streaming device sports improved functionality thanks to the addition of 802.11n WiFi. Additionally, the new O! Play reads a full spectrum of media cards thanks to a multimedia card reader added to the side of the device. According to ASUS, in addition to the commonplace SD format, the HDP-R3 can handle CF and MMS cards as well. Like the original, the HDP-R3 still features USB slots, an Ethernet port, and of course, and HDMI output for full 1080p playback of media files. The HDP-R3 still offers playback of common, and not so common media formats such as MPEG1/2/4, AVI, WMV and MOV. The price on the new O! Play is expected at around $129 when it launches. |
