Toshiba has announced that its dual-layer HD-DVD was approved at a September 14th meeting of the DVD Forum’s Steering Committee. The newly approved discs hold up to 30GB of data, putting them over Sony’s Blu-ray which has a capacity of 25GB. However, the two -layer version of Blu-ray still holds more than Toshiba’s dual-layer disc with a 50GB storage capacity.
The new disc was approved as Version 1.9, its technical specifications will be made available at a later date. Toshiba targets completion of Version 2.0 of the specifications book by the DVD Forum within this year, and aims to bring to market next spring an HD DVD recorder that supports the new disc. The discs share key manufacturing processes with DVD-Rs so manufacturers can minimize their initial investment on production equipment. Toshiba will verify compatibility of the discs in round robin testing at the DVD Forum, starting on October 17. The company is targeting the finalization of Version 2.0 of the specification book within the year.
