High definition technology is taking huge steps in improving integration in the consumer market. Particularly, HD DVD will be making waves with the announcement of Toshiba’s new second-generation HD DVD Players at the CEDIA Expo in Denver.

At the CEDIA Expo in Denver earlier this month, Toshiba unveiled their new, and hopefully improved second-generation HD DVD players. As with the first players there will be two models, the HD-A2 and HD-XA2. While both models are said to have tremendous improvements, the preliminary specs of the HD-A2 does not show much change from the HD-A1. It still is equipped with HDMI 1.2a and lacks an RS-232 port. However, this low-end model will address the load time issues that all early adopters are aware of. The load times for the new HD-A2 are reported as being half of the current model. The HD-A2 is scheduled for release in October of 2006. It will carry an MSRP of $499.99.

The high-end model, HD-XA2, shows much more promise than the other three models combined. This next generation player will be sporting an HDMI 1.3 port, which will allow for twice the video bandwidth. True 1080p output will also be coming to this model. Seeing as how all HD DVD discs released thus far have been encoded for 1080p output, this will be a much-welcomed addition to the player. Finally, the HD-XA2 will also feature faster loading times and improved response time with the redesigned remote control. All these wonderful features will not come without a price, as the new high-end model will carry a $999.99 price tag as opposed to the first generation’s $799.99 price. The HD-XA2 is scheduled for release in December of 2006.
