Redbox Instant Runs $8.00 a Month - $9.00 with Blu-ray  Print E-mail

The folks at Redbox have finally revealed all of the details of their disc and streaming subscription service and it's looking good, especially if you're a Blu-ray fan.  The service will cost $8, which is the same price that Netflix charges for its streaming service.  It's coming to iOS and Android devices as well as TVs and other gear from Samsung and LG as well as Google TV, with more almost certainly on the way.  The streaming doesn't seem to give you much that Netflix doesn't, but Redbox more than makes up for it with the disc rental component of the deal.

Every month, Redbox will give you four credits to be used for DVDs at the kiosk.  Each credit is good for one night, so that can be a single disk for four nights or four discs for one night.  Here's where it gets really cool though.  Shell out an extra buck a month and all four of those credits can be used for Blu-rays.  That's four Blu-ray rentals a month, which normally amounts to $6.00, leaving a $3.00 difference in price for all that unlimited streaming.  If you're just in it for the streaming, this isn't anything too special.  If you want discs though, especially Blu-rays, Redbox Instant may be too good to pass up.
