Taking anything into space is expensive, and cameras are no exception. Building a camera to survive space travel is bad enough, but when it's a new 3-D camera, the price skyrockets. That, combined with recent budget cuts, almost made us miss out on 3-D footage of Mars.
Luckily for us, there's James Cameron. The famed director of 'Avatar' and 3-D enthusiast heard about the cut and called up NASA director Charles Bolden. Then, at a meeting in January, he lobbied for the inclusion of a 3-D camera. The public has been largely uninterested in space exploration in recent years, and Cameron convinced Bolden that this was a great way to get them back. The new rover, Curiosity, will be packing a 3-D camera when it launches in 2011. It looks like we can expect a 3-D Mars experience in IMAX theaters not too long after that. |
