The January slump continues. Only two movies are releasing wide this week, and they’re not that impressive. Still, this should give you plenty of time to catch up on all those Oscar nominees you missed in December.
Edge of Darkness It’s been a great couple of years for father revenge films. Just like every post 2004 Steven Seagal picture, Edge of Darkness is a movie about a retired detective whose daughter has been killed. Mel Gibson plays the role of the father in this case, and his vengeance is sweet. It’s not a deep film, but if you liked Taken, this one’s right up your alley. When in Rome When I look at the cast list for When in Rome, it makes me really want to like this movie. Some of my favorite funnymen from film and TV are in it. Danny DeVito, Will Arnett, Jon Heder and Dax Shepard all make an appearance, as does the great Anjelica Houston. Based on reviews though, stars Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel just don’t do enough to carry this film. North Face (Limited) North Face has been hailed as one of the most brilliantly shot films of the last ten years. It’s based a true story that climbers will be familiar with that revolves around a group of Germans climbing the north face of the Eiger in the Swiss Alps. The views are absolutely stunning, and some critics have even mentioned a feeling of vertigo. As Brian Miller of Village Voice puts it “Shot on location, the film is slow, realistic, and excruciating in its latter stages.” |
