Dolby Laboratories has partnered with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures to help the filmmakers behind this year's new 'Godzilla' film mix the blockbuster in Dolby Atmos. Where previous sound formats have been channel-based (ie, limited to 5.1 or 7.1 channels), Atmos revolutionized surround sound with the introduction of "object-based" mixing, which allows 1) sound designers to place one object (like a helicopter) anywhere in a 360 degree surround sound environment with much more precision and control, and 2) any Atmos mix to scale for cinema houses with as few as 9.1 or as many as 64.4 available channels. It is truly the most immersive surround sound format ever created.

Directed by Gareth Edwards ('Monsters'), the new 'Godzilla' film will stomp into cinemas worldwide on May 16. Click HERE to watch the full trailer, or HERE to hear the infamous Kaiju's new roar. Finally, here is the full Press Release, courtesy of Dolby Laboratories:

Godzilla to Feature Dolby Atmos Mix

Iconic monster to hit big screen with ultimate sound experience

San Francisco, February 25, 2014-Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) today announced that the highly anticipated feature film Godzilla, directed by Gareth Edwards, will be mixed and released in the Dolby Atmos cinema sound platform. The film, from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, will arrive in US theatres on May 16, 2014. Dolby® Atmos™ unleashes the potential of sound in storytelling by giving filmmakers the creative freedom to easily place or move sounds anywhere in the movie theatre with object-based audio to create a lifelike, virtual reality of sound.

"Godzilla is one of the world's most iconic monsters," said Gareth Edwards, director of Godzilla. "I'm really excited we are using Dolby Atmos to truly bring this terrifying force of nature to life."

The Dolby Atmos version of Godzilla will be mixed at Warner Bros. Stage 10 in Burbank, California, by Academy Award® winning rerecording sound mixer Gregg Landaker (sound effects). Academy Award nominated rerecording mixer Rick Kline will work on the music mix, with Tim LeBlanc on dialogue. Academy Award nominated sound specialist Erik Aadahl will lead the sound design and act as supervising sound editor.

"By using Dolby Atmos to place and move sounds anywhere in a movie theatre, Gareth Edwards and his team can recreate the world of Godzilla right in the auditorium, making audiences feel as if they, too, are in the middle of the onscreen action," said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema, Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby Atmos is a real paradigm shift from traditional channel-based approaches like 5.1, 7.1, and 11.1. With this new object-based approach, you are no longer just watching a movie, but experiencing it."

The Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures production will be released theatrically in the United States on May 16, 2014, by Warner Bros. Pictures. About Dolby Atmos
Dolby Laboratories is equipping the cinema world with its new Dolby Atmos technology, the only object-based cinema sound platform available today. Dolby Atmos unleashes the potential of sound in storytelling by providing sound experts the creative freedom to easily place or move specific sounds anywhere in the movie theatre, not just where there happen to be speakers. The result is what moviegoers have described as the most engaging and lifelike cinema sound experience ever.

Introduced in April 2012, Dolby Atmos has been embraced by all the major Hollywood studios, six Academy Award winning directors, and 12 Academy Award winning sound mixers, among others. More than 450 Dolby Atmos screens have been installed or committed to in 40 countries with more than 150 exhibitors. More than 100 films from 11 different countries-representing a broad range of genres from action thrillers and animated features to comedy and horror-have been or are scheduled to be released with Dolby Atmos sound since the first film debuted in June 2012.

Dolby Atmos has received technical achievement awards from both the Hollywood Post Alliance and the Cinema Audio Society. As the inventors of the only object-based audio format used in the cinema today, Dolby is working closely with the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers in driving adoption of standards for object-based audio.
