DTS announced today that it has licensed its real-time surround sound technology, DTS Interactive, to Electronic Arts for the PlayStation2 versions of their games. NHL 2002, is set to be released in late September 2001 and is the world's first game to include real-time interactive surround sound during game-play. DTS has also officially launched its Software Developers Kit (SDK) for DTS Interactive, allowing game developers to quickly encode surround sound for other action-packed Playstation 2 games.
The DTS SDK allows the players to be fully immersed for the first time in the gaming experience with realistic surround sound. EA is the first licensee to incorporate the DTS SDK into a Playstation 2 console game. NHL Hockey 2002 is the first game to use the kit to create its enhanced audio offerings. EA's second game release featuring DTS Interactive surround sound technology, SSX Tricky, will be released later this fall and more titles will follow.
The video gaming industry’s spectacular growth is amazingly projected to surpass the revenues of the feature film industry in 2001. Moreover, gaming machines are being added to high performance home theaters in increasing numbers as both a family entertainment option or as a grown up toy for GenX AV enthusiasts who have been raised on video games.
The EA Sports NHL series of games are particularly popular with hockey fans and gamers alike. The realism and intense detail of past versions of the games, even without DTS surround, were fantastic. Now with DTS surround, hockey fans, gamers and AV enthusiasts have something to cheer for other than the fact Eric Lindros is no longer a Philadelphia Flyer.
