This past Thursday May 21st saw cable broadcasters issue the first round of short warnings about the impending switch to DTV, and a record number of calls to the FCC’s DTV hotline were soon to follow. Over 55,000 callers concerned about the switch were recorded, which greatly surpasses the standard 15,000 calls per day that had been recorded in the previous months.
Chicago, New York and Dallas-Ft. Worth saw the most calls per city, while California, Texas and Illinois saw the most calls per state. The FCC chair, Michael Copps acknowledged that these calls were higher in volume than in previous months, but that the “soft test” that the broadcasters ran did exactly what it was supposed to do: alert those who may not have known about, or who may not have already acted on, the DTV transition. |
