It's been an uphill battle for 3D televisions, but things are really starting to pick up for the new format. In fact, in the third quarter of 2011, shipments of 3D televisions were up 27%. Active set shipments increased by 23% while passive sets like those offered by LG and Vizio went up an impressive 34%. The National Polling Data group estimates that 3D TVs will be in 10% of American homes by the end of the year, bringing the total to 21.5 million units.
Of course, this data is still a bit hard to interpret regarding consumer interest in 3D technology. More and more TVs are coming with 3D capabilities and it's likely that many of these purchases were by people who bought the sets because they were good TVs, not specifically because of the 3D. It's also worth noting that "shipped" doesn't mean "sold." Still, an increase in shipments means that retailers are seeing the value of having those sets on the shelf, and that's a very good sign.
