B&W Loudspeakers, a leader in home entertainment and music systems recently announced the revamped lineup of their CDM family of loudspeakers and has added three additions to their CASA family of components for whole-house, custom-installation audio systems.

Coming in September 2000, the CDM line features the new top-of-the-line floor standing CDM 9NT loudspeaker. The CDM NT Series is comprised of five refined models, including a home-theater center-channel, an all-new narrow profile surround loudspeaker design, as well as three full-range stereo pairs. The CDM 9NT incorporates technologies derived from the B&W's Nautilus family. All five CDM NT designs except for the surround-specific CDM SNT feature tapered-tube tweeter loading and a free-standing tweeter "pod."

The CDM 9NT tweeter also features a highly efficient, redesigned aluminum voice-coil that boasts substantially lower mass than previous designs. Available in a choice of three finishes: Black Ash, Red Ash, and Cherrywood, the $2,600 per pair, the CDM 9NTs two 6.5-inch bass drivers and dedicated 6.5-inch midrange follow in the B&W tradition with woven-Kevlar diaphragms, designed to reproduce articulate mids and quick, defined bass.

B&W’s CASA system was created to bring for the first time the high-end sonic performance for which B&W is known worldwide to the custom-installation field. CASA uses "active" architectural speakers; each equipped with its own low-voltage on-board power amplifier. The four-zone CASA controller is further expandable to up to 32 zones. The controller not only receives instructions from CASA keypads and/or remote controls located in each remote room or zone, it also contains the high-voltage power-supply necessary for each room's active CASA speakers, saving substantial bulk and heat from the remote rooms. Individual CASA components are linked using a single, multicore Cat 5 cable which carries control signals in electrically 'balanced' form as well as the low-voltage power supply and audio signals to the speakers.

B&W's three latest CASA additions to the line are all low-voltage active in-wall designs that are biamplified with independent amplifier channels for woofer and tweeter on board each speaker. The ACM’65 ($750 each) and ACM’80 ($550) are coaxial-round layouts equally suitable for wall or ceiling mounting, while the AWM‘650 ($350) is a powerful discrete two-way speaker.
