Energy Speaker Systems announced that six new Energy Veritas Custom speakers began to ship with the new year. The speakers are the result of an unprecedented three year research and development program at Energy. The program started by recognizing that custom installers have complained for years that flush mounted speakers do not perform as well as box speakers. The research and development program culminated in the six new speakers, which combine Energy driver technology, a new patent-pending mounting system and adjustable circuitry to correct the imaging and tonality problems that have historically plagued all in-wall and in-ceiling speakers.
“The largest problem all loudspeaker designers face with flush mount speakers is the enclosure” said John Tchilinguirian, Vice President of Engineering at Energy. “Other companies have resorted to elaborate back-boxes installed before the drywall. My problem was that any reduction of the wall cavity volume affected deep bass performance. Plus, large back boxes are a nightmare to custom installers. They told us that you can rarely count on a completely empty stud space and that retrofits would be too expensive with a large back box. So, we focused on solving the problems that drywall creates.”
The patent pending Ultra Damped Mounting System helps with wall speaker performance by eliminating the sympathetic resonance of the drywall enclosure. The mounting system affords installers the quickest possible installation while improving performance. First, the all metal new construction bracket reinforces the drywall and installs between the studs and joists rather than on the face, so there is no drywall bulge. After the drywall is installed, the custom installer places two of the Mounting Kit’s Wall Bracers above and below the hole. The Wall Bracers expand to reinforce the drywall and prevent resonance. Next, the installer places the included acoustic and fire rated insulation in the wall cavity.
“Once the wall has been insulated and reinforced, I found that the best way to eliminate further vibration was to use a very dense, heavily constructed clamping bezel around the hole. We made installation fast and secure by spring loading the clamping dogs. The speaker components are mounted on an ultra dense one inch thick piece of MDF which is screwed to the clamping bezel. The overall effect is a thoroughly damped and vibration-free platform suitable for the Convergent Source Module technology!” noted John Tchilinguirian.
“Detail and transparency were restored once we had adequately damped the drywall!” said John Tchilinguirian. “However, when I compared the flush mounted speaker to the box, there was still a noticeable difference between them. A flush mounted speaker has the additional problem of being mounted precisely on at least one of the boundaries of the room. The acoustic effect of this pollutes the image and colors the bass. By extensive computer modeling and many hours of experiment, the engineering department was able to create circuitry that enables the installer to manage the boundary effects of mid wall or corner installations.”
The Energy Veritas Custom line includes four in wall speakers (the v.2.3WM, the v2.2HM, the v2.2WM and the v2.1WM).
